About 300 staff of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) across the country have taken to a press conference to express their frustration and desperation over non-payment of their salaries for the past 10 months.
The affected employees have accused the agency of neglect and frustration, claiming the delay has worsened their financial conditions and, in some cases, driven colleagues to attempt suicide.
The press conference held at CLOGSAG Hall in Kumasi was addressed by the convener of unpaid YEA staff, Mr. Yaw Osei Akoto, who represented the aggrieved staff.
According to him, despite being permanently employed in November 2023 after going through the required public service processes, including technical clearance from the Public Service Commission (PSC) and financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance, the staff have not received any payment.
Background
The staff, who were initially contract staff working with the agency for 2-8 years, were absorbed into permanent positions after a rigorous selection process.
They attended interviews with the PSC and were issued appointment letters dated November 29, 2024, with effect from December 1, 2024. However, despite their best efforts, they have not received any salary payments.
Efforts To Resolve The Issue
The staff have made several attempts to resolve the issue internally, including writing to the CEO, Mr. Malik Basintale, and seeking legal redress through their lawyer. In response, the agency’s head of legal acknowledged receipt of their letter and requested time to review their situation, but no further response has been forthcoming.
Impact On Staff
The non-payment of salaries has had a devastating impact on the staff and their families. Many are struggling to afford basic necessities, including food and education for their children. Some staff members have reported experiencing severe hardship, with one colleague recently attempting to commit suicide due to the unbearable situation. Others are battling with health issues, including stroke.
Call To Action
The staff are pleading with President John Dramani Mahama to intervene in the matter and ensure that their salaries are paid.
They believe that they deserve better treatment and are calling for urgent action to resolve the situation.
