Financial Clearance Secured For 13,500 Unpaid Nurses, Midwives – Health Minister

Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has stated that the government has made significant progress in resolving the issue of unpaid salaries and allowances affecting health workers across the country.

Addressing the media in Accra on Monday, October 13, Mr Akandoh revealed that the Ministry of Health has secured financial clearance for the payment of 17,909 nurses, midwives, and allied health interns who began their national service in early 2024.

He further disclosed that financial clearance has also been granted by the Finance Ministry for 13,500 nurses and midwives who were recruited and posted in late 2024, noting that their clearance, which was due to expire by December 31, 2024, had now been renewed to facilitate full payment.

“Financial clearance secured for payment of the 17,909 nurses, midwives, and allied health interns who started their national service in early 2024. Financial clearance secured for 13,500 recruited and posted late last year [2024], with their financial clearance expiring by 31st December 2024,” he stated.

The Minister assured all affected personnel that the government remained committed to resolving the inherited salary arrears and to strengthening systems to prevent future occurrences.

“The Ministry is putting in place measures as part of a broader agenda to strengthen Ghana’s health system and ensure the welfare of its workforce,” he stated.

Mr Akandoh urged health workers to remain calm and continue to serve diligently while directing any outstanding concerns through the appropriate authorities for prompt redress.
