Stay Vigilant While Covering Galamsey Stories – GJA Ashanti Regional Chair To Journalists

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Kofi Adu Domfeh, has stated that the media has played its role in the fight against illegal mining (galamsey).

He cited the numerous stories published about the issue and the engagement with government officials as evidence of the media’s efforts.

According to Mr. Domfeh, the media has been consistent in highlighting the dangers of galamsey, including its devastating impact on the environment, water bodies, and the livelihoods of communities affected by the practice.

He noted that the media has held the government accountable for its actions, or lack thereof, in addressing the galamsey menace.

This assertion was made by Mr. Domfeh in an interview with Adwenpa-Hene Kofi Mensah on Pent Raido’s Anopa Nsepa Morning program.

He emphasized that the fight against galamsey is far from over and urged journalists to continue showing concern and supporting the fight against illegal mining.

He continued by saying that since the country’s future is in jeopardy, every journalist needs to be worried about the canker.

However, Mr. Domfeh expressed disappointment that despite the media’s efforts, it appears that society is not angry enough about the impact of galamsey.

“We have done our part as the media, now it’s time for the government to take decisive action,” Mr. Domfeh said. “We urge Ghanaians to rise up and demand that our leaders take concrete steps to address the galamsey menace.”

He also urged journalists who cover galamsey stories to be cautious and protect their lives, noting that galamseyers are often armed and that security personnel exercise caution when approaching them.

“Journalists should be extra careful and not risk their lives when covering galamsey stories,” Mr. Domfeh advised. “We value the lives of our journalists and urge them to prioritize their safety above all else.”
