Video: Ghana To Build First Purpose-Built 198km Accra–Kumasi Expressway

Ghana is set to get its first-ever purpose-built expressway linking Accra and Kumasi, with construction plans captured in the 2026 Budget Statement presented in Parliament on Thursday, November 13.

Unlike the existing N6 highway, the new route will be a completely new road constructed to expressway standards, featuring limited access points, higher speed limits, and modern safety infrastructure designed to reduce travel times and enhance road safety.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson told Parliament that the expressway will stretch nearly 200 kilometres, running from the Greater Accra Region through the Eastern Region and into Ashanti, passing key towns including Adeiso, Asamankese, Akim Oda, Ofoase, and Kwaso before entering Kumasi via the Lake Road side (Bosomtwe).

The expressway, part of President John Dramani Mahama’s flagship Big Push Infrastructure Programme, will feature eight major interchanges, including at Accra, Adeiso, Asamankese, Akim Oda, Ofoase, Lake Bosomtwe, and Kumasi, facilitating smoother traffic flow and improved connectivity.
