The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested a 53-year-old man in connection with the alleged production and distribution of locally manufactured alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages suspected to be laced with narcotic substances.
The arrest followed an intelligence-led operation by the Drug Law Enforcement Unit, which led officers to a popular pub known as De-Vicky’s at Akyeremade in the Atwima Kwawoma District of the Ashanti Region.
A subsequent search of a storeroom on the premises uncovered seven barrels of locally produced dry gin, popularly known as akpeteshie, 56 bottles of branded Alomo gin filled with the same locally manufactured spirit, two gallons of sobolo, and one barrel of sobolo.
Police said preliminary assessments indicate that the seized drinks are suspected to be contaminated with narcotic substances.
The suspect is currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, while the seized items have been secured for forensic examination.
