Former President Jerry John Rawlings Goes Home On 27th January.

The funeral of the late Jerry John Rawlings has been scheduled for 24th to 26th January 2021.

A statement issued by Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of the Republic of Ghana dated on 8th January 2021 and sighted by Myghanamedia.com said: “The family of His Excellency Jerry John Rawlings has, in consultation with the government, agreed that the date for the State funeral of the former President is confirmed for 27th January 2021 at the Independence Square in Accra”.

According to the statement; Laying-In-State from 24th to 26th January, 2021 at the Foyer of the Accra Independent Conference Center (AICC) from 9 am to 5 pm daily.

Mass on 26th January, 2021 from 9am to 11am at the Holy Spirit Cathedral, Accra.

Burial Service on 27th January, 2021 from 9am to 11am at Independent Square, Accra.

Background:

The Last Lt. Jerry John Rawlings died on the 12th November 2020 at Korle But Teaching Hospital Accra after he was admitted for a “Short Illness” in Ghana.

Rumours has it that he died of covid-19 which the doctors are yet to reveal what caused his demised.

He dies at the age of 73.

 

Biography

Born on 22 June 1947, Rawlings attended Achimota Secondary School, where he acquired an O’ level certificate in education in 1966. In August 1967 he enlisted as a flight cadet in the Ghana Air Force, earning selection for training at the Ghana Military Academy in Teshie, Accra.

He moved in March 1968 to Takoradi in the Western Region, where he continued pursuing his course. In January 1969 he passed out as a commissioned pilot.

His dedication and hard work earned him the rank of flight lieutenant in 1978. He had a good rapport with his colleagues and showed the highest efficiency in his line of work.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, the leader of the National Democratic Party, three daughters and one son. His eldest child, Zanetor Rawlings, is the NDC MP for Klottey Korle in Accra.
