Dr James Amoah-Dankwa, an Intervention Cardiologist at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), wants the government to impose another lockdown to help tackle the surging COVID-19 cases.
He believes the lockdown will afford government adequate time to break the chain of transmission, especially in communities which are becoming a major source of transmission.
Speaking in Zoom conversation, Dr Amoah-Dankwa said the rate at which people are dying from COVID in recent times is worrying.
“I am of the view that we should have gone back to the original restrictions to make sure that we cut the virus from moving for about one month, when we do it that way, we will be able to contain it like the Chinese did initially,” Dr Amoah-Dankwa said.
He added: “Until we enforce the preventive measures and until we also go back to the original restrictions, then I don’t think we are safe.”
He is of strong conviction that the update of the cases by the Ghana Health Service is not commensurate with the number of cases that are being recorded in health facilities.
“We are admitting more people everyday, so it means if you go into the community and do test you get a lot of cases.”
Ghana is currently recording an average of 200 cases daily. However, the latest COVID-19 figures released by the Ghana Health Service reveal the country has recorded over 600 cases in a day, the highest ever in recent time.
Case update
At least 658 new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed increasing the active cases in Ghana to 2, 413, latest figures from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) reveal.
This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 59, 480 since March 2020.
According to the GHS, 56, 706 have so far recovered and been discharged.
The death toll has hit 361, the GHS coronavirus dashboard indicates.
Airport update
At least 1,029 cases have been confirmed at the Kotoka International Airport since it was reopened to human traffic in September 2020 out of which 601 have recovered.
