Ayensuano NPP Chairman Aspirant Alerts IGP Over ‘Tense’ Constituency Elections

An aspiring New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman for the Ayensuano Constituency in the Eastern Region, Ernest Asante, has charged the National Executives of the party to shun anything that would bring infighting, tension and skirmishes during and after the impending constituency primaries.

He charged the National Organizer, Sammy Awuku, the National Youth Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, the National Chairman, Freddie Blay, the General Secretary, John Boadu, the Director of Election, Evans Yaw Nimako, and other executives to ensure fairness in the internal election processes.

Nominations for constituency executive positions of the party were opened on Tuesday, April 19 and scheduled to end on Thursday, April 21.

The positions being contested from Thursday, April 28 to Monday, May 2 are the Constituency Chairperson, the First Constituency Vice Chairperson, the Second Constituency Vice Chairperson, the Constituency Secretary, the Constituency Assistant Secretary, the Constituency Treasurer, the Constituency Organizer, the Constituency Women Organizer, the Constituency Youth Organizer and the Constituency Nasara Coordinator, in all the 275 constituencies across the country.

Vetting will soon begin and already tensions are high in some constituencies across the country.

The Nasara Coordinator for the Sissala West Constituency in the Upper West Region, for instance, was attacked by a machete-wielding thugs last Monday.

The attackers are alleged to be youth of the party.

In the Ashanti Region, Media General’s Evans Nkum reported that tension is high since some members believe the criteria for the selection agreed upon by the National Executive Council have been flouted.

Even in the polling station elections, which were held recently, some people were butchered and are currently nursing their wounds while others were brutalized.

Reacting to the development in an interview with Onua TV and Onua FM, Mr. Asante, who is popularly known as ‘Toroo’, explained in Twi that “these skirmishes have the tendencies of sending the party into opposition in 2024 elections”.

He explained that some people were allowed to go unopposed in certain positions but that should not have been the case.

“If those people had done good work, the delegates would have voted for them again so why are they afraid of a contest if they had worked?”

Mr. Asante does not understand why some names were sneaked into the NPP album without being voted for but the same person is going to vote to elect someone.

Police alert

The aspiring Chairman alerted the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and his men to be on high alert because if such things happen in the impending primaries, there would be tension in the party and in the country.

Those who would be disenfranchised would not agree to be cheated, he emphasised.

Mr. Asante said the police should issue a stern warning to the NPP ahead of the election because if that is not done, there would be chaos during the elections in most of the constituencies.
