Asante Kotoko Lift 2021/22 Ghana Premier League Trophy

Kumasi Asante Kotoko have lifted the Ghana Premier League trophy following their win over Elmina Sharks at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.

Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum ‘s side secured their position as champions on June 2, but had to wait until their final home game of the season to get their hands on the trophy.

Kotoko were awarded the trophy in front of thousands of fans who were absolutely delighted to witness the team’s success after a disappointing last season in which the Porcupine Warriors went trophyless while bitter rivals Hearts of Oak won both the league and the FA Cup.

It was a record extending 25th league triumph for the Porcupine Warriors.

It was indeed an awe inspiring moment when the “nation worshipper,” brother Sammy, Reggae host and performer, African Child, thrilled the sparse crowd with their own rendition of a mixture of songs.

The excitement got to a crescendo when officials decided to honour their fans by throwing into the crowd a number of souvenirs which resulted in a scramble.

Long service awards were also given to staff, some of who have served the club for close to three decades.

Perhaps, the only missing link in the celebrations was the disappointing turnout of Kotoko’s supporters.

Before the trophy presentation, Kotoko defeated Elmina Sharks 3-0 in an entertaining game.

Left-back Ibrahim Imoro scored a stunning free-kick on 26 minutes to give Kotoko a halftime lead.

Kotoko came out of the break determined to score more goals, and Cameroonian attacker Mfegue Omgba delivered, scoring twice in the final 12 minutes.

The victory was to be expected despite an early threat by Sharks which could hardly go beyond the third quarter of the pitch.

It was not only a coronation ceremony to crown the Fabulous boys, but it also marked the convocation of old players, most of who were clad in an all white apparel, with Kotoko greats of different generations, including Opoku Nti, Joe Debrah, Frimpong Manso, Joe Okyere, Eric Bekoe and Joe Louis, making their presence felt in an electrifying atmosphere that brought back fond memories of the club’s great past.

The Kotoko stars gave the fans a foretaste of the crowning moment when they held the league trophy, walked majestically onto the pitch and placed it on a stand.

Men of War sent forth to battle from the Asante Kingdom, return as victors to give us one of the club’s most memorable #GPL moments on the night that they receive their crown.

Kotoko will conclude their campaign in Accra against Accra Lions, while relegated Sharks will host Great Olympics.
