Teacher Strike: Closely Supervise Kids – GES Urges Heads Of Basic Schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed heads of all basic schools to keep the institutions open despite the strike action by the teachers.

The teachers on Monday, July 4 proceeded on an indefinite strike as a result of the non-payment of a demanded cost of living allowance (COLA).

They are demanding a 20 percent allowance to cushion them in the face of economic hardships resulting in high cost of living.

Aside the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana (CCT-G), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) also joined the strike with same demand.

The demand was first made by the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) at this year’s May Day celebrations.

But after their June 30 ultimatum was not met, the teachers triggered the industrial action to withdraw their services.

However, a statement issued by GES on Tuesday, July 5 said schools should be open while heads “closely supervise all children who report to school pending further directives from Management of GES”.

Meanwhile, a meeting has been scheduled between Management of GES and leadership of the teacher unions for a discussion of the matter.
