Some youth in the ruling government, New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Atwima Mponua Constituency of the Ashanti Region have threatened to vote against the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Isaac Kwame Assiamah, in the December poll for failing to honour promises made them.
The aggrieved youth said the incumbent Member of Parliament who doubles as Sports Minister promised, among other things, to create jobs and tar road networks but despite being in parliament for 16 years he has not been able to fulfill the promise.
“Ever since he won the 2012 parliamentary elections, I have never set eyes on him,” an angry resident, Master Fynn said.
Many of the residents in the constituency especially Mpasaatia, Kyekyewere, Adobawora, kyerayaso Nkwata, Abesua electoral areas which contains almost six(6) Communities, Baakoniaba and Nyinahin the district capital said the MP promised to fix their deplorable road networks and help some of the youth to be recruited into the security services but has still not been fulfilled.
The youth said they have developed trust and confidence in the independent parliamentary candidate, Mr James Agyarko-Poku, who is a member of the NPP and contesting the seat for the first time.
Mr Agyarko decided to contest in the NPP parliamentary primaries but was denied the opportunity to contest the incumbent MP.
He, however, filed to contest the seat as independent candidate.
Most of the people interviewed said although they will vote for President Akufo Addo, the incumbent MP contesting on the ticket of the NPP will be voted against.
“We’ve decided already. Assiamah doesn’t do anything for us. We are going to vote for Agyarko-Poku,” a resident said.
“Agyarko-Poku is a hardworking man. We saw what he did during the 2016 general elections and what he is doing for the youth in constituency now. He will deliver if we vote for him,” constituency organizer, Obama said.
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo is in the region and expected to address the people of Atwima Mponua on Wednesday, 2nd November, 2020.
The youth have, however, cautioned President not to campaign against the independent candidate else they will vote against him.
