Tension is mounting at Akropong-Akuapem in the Eastern Region after the National House of Chiefs on Thursday, September 29, 2022, upheld the legitimacy of the Okuapehene Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III.
This is a confirmation of an earlier ruling by the House of Chiefs last year.
The ruling has renewed tension in Akropong as the faction of the Okuapehene has gone into wild jubilation.
The Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Anderson Fosu-Ackah and his deputy DCOP Emmanuel Twumasi Ankrah have led the contingent from the Formed Police Unit(FPU) and other personnel to Akropong township to maintain law and order.
The police have taken strategic positions around the palace whiles others in service vehicles and motorbikes patrol the town.
The military has also been deployed to the town to augment the security provided by the police.
The legitimacy of Okuapehene Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III was challenged at the National House of Chiefs by Okuapehemaa Nana Obuor Nketia.
According to the petitioner, Okuapehemaa, the enstoolment of Okuapehene was done in breach of customs and tradition.
Owing to this, the President of Akuapem Traditional Council who’s also the Aburihene, Otoobuor Gyan Kwasi II, placed a ban on this year’s Odwira durbar citing the pending case before the National House of Chiefs.
Nana Asiedu Offei a Presiding member and an elder at the Palace says the ruling should put to rest the chieftaincy dispute for the factions to unite to champion the development of Okuapeman.
It is not clear if the petitioners will go to the Supreme court for final determination.
