The Deputy Chief Whip of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Habib Iddrisu has stated that former President John Mahama would be mincemeat for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia if the two are pitched against each other in the 2024 presidential election.
According to him, there is no way Mr. Mahama can beat Dr Bawumia.
He made his assertion on Newsfile on Saturday, during a discussion on which of the flagbearer aspirants of the NDC will win the race.
In the ND flagbearer race, Mr Mahama will come against a former Finance Minister, Dr. Kwabena Duffour, former Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Kojo Bonsu, and a businessman from the Weija-Gbawe Constituency Ernest Kwaku Kobeah.
The MP for Tolon Constituency in the Northern Region said that the former president has the capability of winning the flagbearership race of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He noted however, that though Mahama will be the best candidate to lead the NDC, he will be the easiest candidate to be defeated by Dr Bawumia.
Mr Iddrisu said the other aspirants contesting for the NDC flagbearership race with Mahama are just in the contest to register their presence.
“I think that the 3 others competing with former President John Mahama are just to register their presence. He [Mahama] will not win nothing less than 95 per cent so we wish him well”.
“I don’t expect former President Mahama to win less than 95 per cent of the vote. I don’t expect that. Within the NDC, he is popular but he is going to be the easiest candidate for Dr Bawumia to beat”, he said.
However, a survey which was conducted last year by Global InfoAnalytics revealed that former President John Mahama will beat Dr Bawumia and Alan Kyerematen who are the frontrunners of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections.
It said the NDC’s 2020 flagbearer has more appeal than both the Vice President and the former Minister for Trade and Industry.
Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is considered as one of the leading aspirants in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) seeking to take over from President Akufo-Addo.
The vice president is yet to declare his intention to contest in the flagbearership slot of the NPP.
He revealed in an interview on a Kenyan television channel last year that he is rather focused on helping President Akufo-Addo deliver on his mandate.
He said there are many problems facing the country that he is helping to address.
Meanwhile, former president Mahama on Wednesday, February 22, picked nomination forms for the upcoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearership race.
He declared his intention to contest the elections during a visit to his residence by the Minority Caucus on Tuesday, February 21.
The forms were picked by Mr Alabi on behalf of Mr Mahama. He said the time is now for a messiah to take the country out of the woods.
