Ashaiman Swoop: As Your Former Commander-In-Chief, Exercise Restraint – Mahama Urges Military

Former President John Dramani Mahama has called on the military to exercise restraint and allow due processes to take their course despite the pains killing of a soldier under strange circumstances come with.

He stated that he appreciates how such unexpected deaths affect the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) but the military must recognise that there may be obviously innocent citizens who live and work in Ashaiman.

“The military must, therefore, refrain from meting out extra-judicial justice to them,” he stated on Wednesday, March 8 on his official Facebook page.

This comes after a young soldier by name Imoro Sherrif was gruesomely murdered at Ashaiman on Saturday, March 4.

He was found in a pool of blood near the Amania Hotel in Ashaiman and suspected to have been stabbed to death.

The Military High Command on Tuesday sanctioned an intelligence-led operation to fish out the perpetrators of the crime.

In the course of the operation, several civilians reported of brutalities meted out to them.
Soldiers stormed Ashaiman in armoured vehicles

But at the end, 184 persons were picked up and handed over to the Ghana Police Service through the Military Police.

Weighing into the incident, the former President sympathised with the bereaved family and GAF as well as the “victims of the torture in Ashaiman as a result of this unfolding death of a serving soldier”.

“I pray we find peace and harmony in our dear country, as the government and state institutions immediately step in to address this potentially inflammatory development between Ashaiman and the Ghana Armed Forces; including providing commensurate compensation for all persons affected.”
