Recycle Up! Ghana, a “Non-Governmental Organization in collaboration with The Coca-Cola Foundation organised an event to celebrate the women waste pickers in the Ashanti region on the International Women’s Day.
The event forms part of the organisation’s ongoing Community Recycling Project’ with funding from The Coca-Cola Foundation being undertaken in the Ashanti Region.
The event under the theme “Celebrating The Role of Female Waste Pickers, Key Players In Environmental Sustainability” witnessed over 100 female waste pickers in the Ashanti Region undergoing a health screening.
The over 100 women went through a health awareness education as well as had medical doctors provide OPD consulting and received some medication donated by Pokupharma LTD.
The program also saw the women receive words of encouragement from other women leaders from Kumasi.
A total of 6 women were awarded with a total cash prize of GHC 1500. The speakers included the Queen Mother of Fumesua, CEO of Women’s Haven Africa, and Corporate Trainer.
The Executive Director of Recycle Up! Ghana, Abdulrahim Shaibu-Issah in his speech said the reason for the event was to unite all the waste pickers under one network to enable them access support and livelihood interventions.
He also reiterated, Recycle Up! Will continue to work with the new waste pickers network formed to support them.
The Queen Mother of Fumesua in her closing remarks, advised the women to take care of their health while working and to also watch the things they consume into their system.
She also thanked the women for their effort in building and cleaner Ghana and expressed her happiness with what Recycle Up! Ghana is doing with the waste pickers network.
