Mahama Explains Why He Is Not Retiring After Presidency

Former President John Dramani Mahama says it is expected of him from many Ghanaians to retire, having served from the low rung on the political ladder to the top.

But he expressed conviction that the country needs his experience that is why he is not retiring anytime soon.

“If not for the experience Ghana needs, I would have gone on retirement,” he told delegates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in Twi, in Suhum in the Eastern Region.

Mr Mahama is on a tour of the Region as he canvasses for votes ahead of the May 13 presidential primaries of the party.

“Ghana is calling on men and women to come and deliver the country from the current bondage,” he said on Wednesday, April 12.

He stated that his wife, Lordina, would have taken good care of him, by way of providing all the food he wanted, if he retired while he now has a grand-daughter he can also coddle.

But he said Ghana needs his experience to turn the current economic situation around.

Mr Mahama also assured the delegates that they will be empowered in order to discharge their duties well as the party gears up for the 2024 elections.

He pointed out that the Akufo-Addo-led government came with mouthwatering promises but has hugely disappointed Ghanaians.

He said at a point, the government blamed Covid-19 for the economic difficulties, then later the Russia-Ukraine war.

He stated, in jest, that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, then, turned inward to blame Ghanaians about them making too much noise, causing the Cedi’s downfall.

He said all these are to throw dust into the eyes of Ghanaians.

The former President, therefore, urged the delegates to give him the mandate on Saturday, May 13 like they did in 2019.
