Abandoned 6-unit Classroom Block, Auxiliary Facilities Affects Access To Education In Akyem Kroboase

A six-unit classroom block and other auxiliary facilities at Akyem Kroboase Primary School in the Birim South District of the Eastern Region has been abandoned for years to the point of it becoming dilapidated.

The Akyem Kroboase Basic School which is the only school nearby has little or no space to accommodate the over 200 school children.

The Secretary of the Community, Mr Eric Asante, in an interview with “The Developmental Journalists” bemoaned the delay of the project.
“The project started under former President John Dramani Mahama’s Administration in 2016, but when the current NPP-led Government came to power, the project which had reached the roofing stage stalled, and has remained at the same stage for over 7 years now” Mr Eric revealed.
The said abandoned six classroom blocks and would, if completed, ease pressure on the student population in classrooms and make them comfortable. While the project remains uncompleted, the teachers and pupils of the school are forced to use the only few structures as their classrooms.

According to him, there were high hopes the problem of lack of classroom infrastructure would be addressed after completion of the classroom block, yet that has remained an illusion for five years; as the project has not been completed to serve the purpose for its construction.

He said that “We have been complaining over the issue which their Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Nyarko says is a GETFund project and cannot continue because government doesn’t want to top up the funds for the project to continue”.

Akyem Kroboase Primary School is in a state of near collapse as students are exposed to the risk of weak structures.

“We need to get a national policy to avoid political interest in our development as a nation, especially on school infrastructure. Why should every government have to abandon its predecessor’s project to get to the point of dilapidation?” he quizzes authorities.

Mr Eric added that the contractor who is in-charge of the project says he is not getting the funds he needs to complete the project and wants the community to sell off his remaining equipment and send him his money through MoMo.

The Developmental Journalists are ready to fight for the completion of this project.

“We (The Developmental Journalists) are calling on His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo and the NPP administration to as matter of urgency come and complete the building to offer a conducive environment for teaching and learning to take place.”
The Developmental Journalist also appeals to individuals, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and philanthropists for financial aid to assist the project.
