Government has proclaimed Monday, May 1, 2023 a legal holiday.
This was announced by the Interior Ministry.
May 1, is marked as May Day or International Workers Day worldwide and is marked to celebrate the achievements of workers.
In 1889, an international federation of socialists and trade unions in Europe decided to create a similar holiday: International Workers’ Day (or Labour Day) to be celebrated on May 1 of each year, a tradition that continues to this day in more than 60 countries.
As such the Interior Ministry has announced that Monday, May 1, shall be observed as a statutory holiday throughout the country.
Durbars are expected to be held by workers’ unions across the country.
Below is the statement released by Interior Ministry:
The general public is hereby informed that Monday, 1st May, 2023 which marks May Day (Workers Day) which is a Statutory Public Holiday
and should be observed as such throughout the country.
Signed
AMBROSE DERY (MP)
MINISTER FOR THE INTERIOR
