The Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed plans to replace textbooks with laptops in the country’s educational system.
According to Dr. Bawumia, this move is part of a broader effort to modernize the educational system in Ghana and make it more accessible to all students. He said this on Saturday 27th May, 2023 during the celebration of the 60th anniversary of Hohoe Evangelical Presbyterian Senior High School (HEPSS)
In actual fact, Ursula Owusu Ekuful also gave this promise in 2017 “We will revive one child, one tablet policy”. The Vice President outlined the many benefits of this transition, including greater access to information, improved learning outcomes, and reduced costs. By providing students with laptops, they will have access to a wealth of information at their fingertips. This will enable them to better understand complex concepts and engage in more interactive learning experiences.
In addition, the adoption of laptops in the classroom will allow for greater collaboration among students and teachers. This is because laptops can be used to share documents, work on group projects, and communicate with other students and teachers. By fostering a more collaborative learning environment, students will be better equipped to work together and develop the skills needed to succeed in the 21st century.
Another important benefit of this transition is the reduction in costs associated with traditional textbooks. Textbooks are often expensive and can be difficult to update, leading to outdated information and a suboptimal learning experience. By using laptops instead of textbooks, schools can save money in the long run and ensure that students have access to the most up-to-date information.
While there are some concerns about the potential drawbacks of this transition, Dr. Bawumia is confident that the benefits far outweigh any risks. He emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring that all students have access to the necessary technology and resources to succeed in the modern world.
