The Black Princesses of Ghana completed the host and win assignment on Saturday, June 3, as they beat Nigeria in the final of the WAFU Zone B U-20 Cup of Nations.
The game at the Baba Yara Stadium travelled to penalty shootouts after both teams scored a goal each within 90 minutes of play.
Stella Nyamekye opened the scoring for Ghana in the first half, stepping up from the spot after Comfort Owusu was fouled in the box. The Dreamz Ladies’ midfielder netted her fourth goal of the tournament to give Ghana the lead.
Yusif Basigi’s side looked certain to wrap up the game in the second half as they held onto their lead and kept the Nigerians at bay.
However, with five minutes away from full time, the away team on the day got their equaliser after a miscommunication between goalkeeper Afi Amenyaku and her defence.
Flourish Sabastine took advantaged and got her side level but they could have fallen short once again as Georgina Ayisha Aoyem’s effort came off the crossbar.
The draw at the end of the day meant the game went into penalties where Ghana’s Afi Amenyaku made three saves from four takes to seal the victory for the Balck Princesses with Mary Amponsah scoring the winning penalty.
