Documents available exclusively to Asaase News confirm that when Vice President of the 4th Republic of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was appointed as a director of the Ghana International Bank PLC in the United Kingdom (UK), he listed as a Ghanaian and not as a British.

Form 288a is a Companies House form which is used to appoint a director or secretary in the UK. From 1st October 2009 Form 288a was replaced with a new Companies Act Forms AP01 and AP02.

Company House Form

According to the Companies House form 288a completed by Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on 18 October 2006, the Vice President’s address is listed as House number No. 48 6th Estate Road, Kanda Estates, and country /Region is recorded as Greater Accra.

On the same form (288a), Dr Bawumia’s country is identified as Ghana and his Nationality is Ghanaian while his business occupation is Banker. The Vice President Appended his signature to the document on 18 October 2006 and same was counter signed by the secretary on the same day.

Clerical error

However, it appears there is a clerical error recorded on the website of the UK government, www.gov.uk, on the nationality of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

The website correctly quotes the address of Dr Bawumia as House number No. 48 6th Estate Road, Kanda Estates and identifies the address as “foreign”. It also states the role he played at the Ghana International Bank PLC as director who has since resigned effective 15 April 2009.

On the issue of nationality, the UK government’s website lists the Vice President as a British while confirming his occupation as a Banker as listed on the Companies House form (form 288a).

Persons claiming that the Vice President holds British citizenship appear to be relying on the error on the UK government’s website to advance their argument.

Claims dismissed

Dr Gideon Boako, spokesperson for Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, has however, dismissed claims in sections of mainstream media and social media that Dr Bawumia holds British citizenship even though he is the serving Vice President of the Republic in violation of the 1992 constitution.

In a post on his Facebook wall, Dr Boako stated that Dr Bawumia has never held British citizenship, or any other citizenship in addition to being a Ghanaian citizen in his life time. He subsequently called on the general public and all well-meaning Ghanaians to treat the claims with the contempt it deserves.

“The attention of the Office of the Vice President has been drawn to a malicious social media allegation that the Vice President holds a British citizenship while holding the office of Vice President, contrary to the laws of Ghana,” his Facebook post read.

“We wish to state in clear terms that Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia does not hold British citizenship and has never held British or any other citizenship other than being a Ghanaian. The allegation should be treated with the contempt it deserves” the post further read.

Yalley’s propaganda

Mr Boako’s clarification follows claims made by a former Ghanaian ambassador to India, Sam Pee Yalley, that the Vice President holds British citizenship.

Mr Yalley reportedly made the claims in an interview with XYZ TV on Thursday, 8 June 2023. He alleged that records available to him that he did not disclose, indicate that the Vice President had British citizenship when he worked in the United Kingdom.

He added that Mr. Bawumia never renounced his British citizenship and is, therefore, not eligible to hold public office in Ghana, just like the now deposed member of Parliament for Assin North constituency, James Gyakye Quayson, who’s nomination, election and swearing in as a member of Parliament was declared as unconstitutional, null, void and of no legal effect by the Supreme Court of Ghana on 17 May 2023.
