The opposition National Democratic Congress’ attempts to drag Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia into a citizenship dispute have backfired.
The NDC is making the claim that Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia holds British citizenship, giving the appearance that he is unfit for the post he holds. However, an aide to the vice president claims the accusations are unfounded and without foundation.
According to the vice president’s spokesperson, Dr. Gideon Boako, his employer has never held British citizenship, or any other citizenship for that matter.
“These claims are nothing but a desperate attempt to tarnish the Vice President’s reputation,” Dr. Boako wrote.
Dr. Bawumia’s citizenship status speculations began circulating on social media earlier this week. Some claimed that the Vice President got British citizenship while working on secondment from the Bank of Ghana in the United Kingdom, and that he never renounced it.
Former diplomat Sam Pee Yelley added fuel to the fire by alleging that the vice president had failed to renounce his citizenship.
Dr. Boako’s comment, however, has put these claims to rest. Dr. Bawumia has always retained his Ghanaian citizenship and has never held any other citizenship, according to him.
“Dr. Bawumia is a proud Ghanaian who has dedicated his life to serving his country.” He has never held any other citizenship and remains entirely devoted to Ghana’s development and success,” Dr. Boako stated.
Ghanaians who have been following the speculations with curiosity have appreciated the statement. Many people have complimented Dr. Bawumia for his devotion to Ghana and his dedication to public service.
Dr. Bawumia was elected Vice President of Ghana in 2016 and has held that position ever since.
He is highly regarded as a capable and effective leader with a strong grasp of economic concerns.
The Vice President has yet to respond to the suspicions about his citizenship, but Dr. Boako’s speech is anticipated to put the matter to rest.
It remains to be seen whether Dr. Bawumia would face any other allegations in the future.
