In a surprising turn of events, the medical community at Kumasi South Hospital also known as Agogo Hospital in the Ashanti Region finds itself embroiled in a controversy over the appointment of Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso, the retired former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

The decision to bring Dr. Owusu-Danso out of retirement and place him in a new role has sparked discontent among the hospital’s workers.

Dr. Owusu-Danso’s was appointed by His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo-Addo as the acting CEO of KATH in 2017, he later assumed the full-time position and led the hospital for an extended term that ended in 2022.

His tenure, characterized by efforts to elevate the facility’s stature, eventually culminated in his retirement.

However, the government’s decision to appoint Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso as a Consultant for Plastic Reconstructive and Hand Surgery at Kumasi South Hospital has been met with skepticism and resistance.

Employees, represented by Mr. Joshua Lawerence Nii Arday, Vice Chairman for the Health Services Workers Union at the Agogo Hospital, express their reservations about this appointment.

Notably, they raise concerns about the non-existent department for which Dr. Owusu-Danso is being brought on board.

While the workers acknowledge that they respect the government’s prerogative to make appointments, they emphasize the importance of practicality and suitability.

According to Mr. Arday, the existing staff at Kumasi South Hospital possesses the capability to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

The assertion that their competence and expertise render Dr. Owusu-Danso’s appointment unnecessary underscores the prevailing sentiment.

As the debate rages on, the controversy highlights the complexities of personnel decisions within the healthcare sector.

It also raises questions about the feasibility and logic behind appointing individuals to positions that appear disconnected from the institution’s operational reality.

The appointment of Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso at Kumasi South Hospital has ignited a fervent debate.

While the government’s intention might have been well-meaning, the situation underscores the need for alignment between appointments and the operational context.

As the healthcare community navigates this issue, it remains to be seen whether a resolution that satisfies all parties can be reached.
