Reverend Christian Kwabena Andrews, also known as Osofo Kyiri Abosom, who was the 2020 presidential candidate for the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), has issued a warning against Ghana’s intervention in the ongoing coup crisis in Niger.
He declared his intention to lead a protest if President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo sends Ghanaian troops to intervene in Niger’s internal affairs.
During a press briefing in Accra, Osofo Kyiri Abosom emphasized that Ghana should focus on addressing its own domestic challenges and avoid interfering in the affairs of other countries. He urged President Akufo-Addo to consider the safety of Ghanaian military personnel and the bond between the military and the citizens.
Osofo Kyiri Abosom warned that if the president proceeds with intervention despite their plea, GUM would lead a protest against the president’s decision and his administration. He emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence and avoiding violence.
He also questioned the rationale behind ECOWAS’ involvement in the Niger situation, suggesting that the focus should be on resolving internal issues before engaging in conflicts outside the country. He cited Nigeria’s ongoing struggles with Boko Haram as an example.
Additionally, the General Secretary of GUM announced the upcoming opening of nominations for the flagbearer and national executive positions, with a required fee of GH¢100,000 for prospective presidential candidates.
