Major (rtd) Kwadwo Boakye Djan, a former member of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) has died at the age of 80.

Boakye Djan died on Wednesday morning (30 August) at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra after a short illness.

He was a Ghanaian military officer and political figure known for his involvement in Ghana’s political and military landscape.

Boakye Djan attended secondary school at Opoku Ware School for his O Level and also attended Achimota School for his sixth form.

He joined the Ghana Armed Forces and rose through the ranks, becoming a prominent figure within the military.

He held various positions and became a Brigadier General, gaining recognition for his leadership skills and influence.

Boakye Djan played a significant role in Ghana’s political history during the 1970s and early 1980s.

In 1981, he was part of the group that orchestrated the December 31 coup, which brought Rawlings to power for the second time. However, Djan’s relationship with Rawlings would later deteriorate.

In 1982, Boakye Djan was accused of plotting against Rawlings’ government and attempting to undermine his authority. As a result, he was arrested and faced charges of conspiracy. He was subsequently dismissed from the military and detained.

This marked a significant shift in his relationship with Rawlings, as they had previously been allies.

Boakye Djan was released from detention in 1992 when Ghana transitioned back to civilian rule. He remained active in Ghanaian politics and occasionally voiced his opinions on national affairs.
