A press conference which was to be addressed by presidential candidate hopeful of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, where he was expected to announce his decision to pull-out of the 4 November 2023, presidential primaries of the NPP has been postponed indefinitely by the Alan for President (A4P) campaign team.
Not only was he expected to pull out, according to sources within his inner circle of advisors, the former Trade Minister had hinted Sunday his intention to contest the 2024 presidential race outside of the ticket of the New Patriotic Party.

This, from our checks, has angered many of his core team members, particularly the parliamentarians. Notable among them are Sylvester Tetteh and Davis Opoku Ansah.
The notice of cancelation of today’s press conference was posted on social media by the A4P team, reads: “This is to kindly inform the general public the press conference scheduled for today, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 at Movenpick Ambassador Hotel at 2:00pm has been cancelled. Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted”.

Mr Kyerematen according Asaase News sources familiar with his recent engagements with his coordinators and supporters, is said to have informed them in a meeting held on Sunday 3 September 2023, that he intends to pull-out of the NPP presidential primaries but he will contest the December 2024 general elections.
Some members of his team, Asaase News sources indicated, pushed Mr Kyerematen for better clarity on his decision. Essentially, they wanted to know if he was going to contest as an independent candidate, whether or not he was going to join a political party or form his own political party ahead of the December 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections. But, he is said to have left it vague.
Support base
Prior to the cancellation of the press conference, some known supporters of Mr Alan Kyerematen, had taken to social media to pledge their allegiance to the New Patriotic Party. Member of Parliament for Mpraeso constituency in the Eastern Region, Davis Opoku Ansah, alias OPK, who is a known Alan loyalists since 2006, took to his Facebook Wall where he posted the NPP symbol and wrote “100%” above the post.
OPK’s message appears clear: that his loyalty is first and foremost to the party and would not support any breakaway move.
If Alan had gone ahead with his press conference, his projected announcement to pull-out of the race would not have come as a surprise because of his poor showing in the first round of voting in August by the party to trim down the numbers to five from the original ten aspirants.
Even though, Mr Kyerematen, contesting for th fourth time, was among the five shortlisted, he was left trailing at third place to two new entrants, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who won by a distant 68% of the Special Electoral College, followed by Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, MP for Assin Central, at a distant second with a little over 14% of the vote.
Seen by many as the heir presumptive after Akufo-Addo, to be beaten to third place by two new entrants, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, MP, have mightily deflated Mr Kyerematen’s dwindling supporters.
His bad showing will also make it extremely difficult to raise the necessary funds to campaign across the country, meeting the delegates, who are in excess of 200,000.
Alan came a distant second or third in all 16 regions, losing by worrying margins, all four regions he had expected a decent showing, namely Ashanti, Greater Accra, Volta and Central.
The reality is that his poor showing in the first round of voting has effectively killed his “Aduru Wo So” (It is your turn) mantra.
