Morocco has been voted the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) host nation by the members of the Confederation of African Football’s Executive Committee.
The North African country got all 22 votes in its favour from Wednesday’s poll in Cairo, Egypt, with Nigeria and Algeria getting zero votes.
Algeria had said in the eve of the vote that it has withdrawn its bids for the 2025 and 2027 tournaments.
Morocco will now replace Guinea, who were originally scheduled to host the 2025 AFCON, but had the rights taken away from them because of delays in getting infrastructure ready.
Meanwhile, a joint Eastern African bid from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania won the rights to host the 2027 edition of the premiere national football competition in Africa.
Reacting to the news of the acceptance of its bid, East Africa’s football governing body, Cecafa, wrote on X (Twitter): “AFCON is coming HOME.
“The #AFCON2027 East African PAMOJA BID has officially been accepted by CAF. Such a significant period for Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
“The CECAFA region is READY to receive the best of the best from across the continent.”
