The Ghana Education Service (GES), Birim Central Directorate in the Eastern Region, in collaboration with the Birim Central Municipal Assembly (BCMA), and the Office of the Akyem Oda Member of Parliament, have organized the Teacher Prize aims to celebrate and honor teachers and education workers for their efforts in contributing to the Municipality’s education sector.
TEACHER RECOGNITION
The 2023 Teacher Prize, is the first of its kind since 2012, was held at the Dr&Mrs.Kwarko Conference Hall, on Wednesday, October 18, 2023.
43 and 32-inch LED TVs, tabletop fridges, certificates of participation and plaques(crystal clear trophies), as well as valuable items, were presented to 12 deserving teaching and non-teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Birim Central Directorate who distinguished themselves in other categories of the awards, including leadership, senior high, JHS, primary and kindergarten levels.
“The Teachers We Need for the Education We Want in the Birim Central Municipality” was the theme of the program.
The presidential advisor, Hon. Yaw Osafo Maafo, Hon. William Agyapong Quaittto, the Chief Executive Officer of the Tree Crop Development Authority, Alhaji Ishmaela Ibrahim, who is the Director of Operations,Office of the Vice President, Advocate Publishing, and Glico Insurance, The Birim Central Municipal Assembly, Domod Aluminium, Hon. Alexander Akwasi Acquah, MP, Akim Oda Constituency and a few others were, the major sponsors of the event.
Birim Central Municipal Teacher Prize was part of activities to mark the 2023 World Teachers Day (WTD).
The WTD is marked on October 5, every year to celebrate gallant teachers, as well as the introduction of the 1966 International Labour Organisation and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ILO/UNESCO) recommendations concerning the status of the teacher.
SELECTING THE VICTORS
A selection committee was established to go through the submitted applications, including work inspections.
The chairman of the planning and sponsorship committee, Hon. Castro Asumadu Addae, said that this year’s winners were an amazing bunch that completely embodies the spirit of the awards.
He further stated that, their imagination, empathy, dedication, and passion for service have left a lasting impression on their students and made education in the municipality much better.
OVERCOMING HEROES
The 2023 Birim Central Municipal Over all Best Teacher Prize, went to Mr. Narh Devine Ankrah, a teacher at Oda Senior High School.
For his prize, he received a 43″ TV, trophy, 1 tabletop fridge, and 1 set of cooking ware(utensils).
The first runner-up was Madam Millicent Fiagbemeh, a tutor at ST. Francis Senior High Technical School. She also took home, a 43″ TV, trophy, and 1 set of cooking ware (utensils).
Amoah Antwi William Wilson, who teaches at Attafuah Senior High Technical School, became the second runner-up and was presented with a 43″ tv, and 1 set of cooking ware(utensils).
All of the teachers who were nominated received certificates of participation as well.
ACKNOWLEDGMENT
The presidential advisor, Hon. Yaw Osarfo Maafo, who was the special guest of honor, praised the teachers’ outstanding contribution to achieving high-quality education and shaping great and future leaders.
He emphasized that the accomplishments of educators should not be undervalued, calling them the cornerstone of the continuous improvements and significant funding in Ghana’s education system.
In order to elevate the education sector, he promised to assist the Ghana Education Service (GES), Birim Central Directorate.
He additionally acknowledged the outstanding contribution made by Mrs. Esther Quaye-Sowah, the Municipal Education Director to the achievement of high-quality education in the area.
He also commended the program’s organizers for putting in place a program of this kind, which will motivate educators to put in more effort because their efforts are being noticed.
“The winning teachers do not only support their students in the classroom but at after-school events as well. Some even continue to mentor our students today. We are glad to show our appreciation for this exceptional group” says Hon. Yaw Osarfo Marfo in his congratulations to the winners.
While commending the awardees for achieving the feast, he also charged them to continue to give their best to help develop the future generation.
He wished the teachers who were nominated but did not win luck in the next round.
The Municipal Education Director, Mrs. Esther Quaye-Sowah, on her part, urged educators to keep doing their best work for the country, regardless of the difficulties they may encounter.
She pledged his outfit’s commitment to continue to champion the interest and welfare of teachers to help promote teaching and learning in schools.

TRIUMPHANT SPEECH
The overall best teacher, Narh Devine Ankrah, expressed his appreciation for the award and said it would motivate him to work even more.
In addition to empathizing with students, It’s important to remind children that life will continue after their toughest moments
According to him, Teaching, for me, is more than just the practical ideas that make someone a ‘good’ teacher.
He argues that teaching is more than merely applying the theoretical concepts that define a “good” teacher.
