The Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana, and the Federation of Senior Staff Association Ghana, have declared an indefinite strike, with effect from January 17, 2024.
The decision is as result of what they describe as the Government’s persistent disregard for the welfare of their members and other conditions of service.
The industrial action by the Senior Staff Association is to protest the government’s delay in releasing tier-two pension funds and a directive by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, for the cancellation of payment of overtime allowance for weekend and holiday work.
Consequently, they have withdrawn several services, including the processing of student admissions and graduations, medical services, security, dental care, laboratory facilities, hostel accommodations, mortuary services, laborer’s, cleaners, maintenance, and estate management.
National Chairman of the Association, Isaac Donkor at a press conference in Accra on January 17, said they reached this decision because of Government’s persistent disregard for their efforts.
“We have had to reach this painful decision because the Government has not shown goodwill and faith in our discussions. Immediately starting today, we have declared an indefinite strike, across Ghana, until Government is ready to engage us,´ he emphasized.
They want the government to meet these demands before they resume work.
“We demand an immediate release of our pension funds, and also a reversal of the directive on overtime on holiday and weekend work. It is against our working conditions and terns of service”, he stated.
The Association has membership, which runs into thousands, in all 16 public universities.
