Atwima Mponua: Gyereso Residents Appeal For ‘Death Trap’ School Blocks To Be Fixed

The Chiefs and Residents at Gyereso in Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region are pleading with the government to assist them in renovating the infrastructure of their nearly 80-year-old dead trap School.

A decent classroom block for pupils of any basic school in Ghana should certainly not be too much to ask.

But in a country where such basic needs almost become a luxury, it is really a big deal to find yourself in a befitting classroom, especially in rural Ghana.

Pupils of Gyereso Primary School, for instance, are not enjoying this privilege as their classroom blocks have become death traps.

They are thus asking the government to fix their dilapidated classroom blocks to enhance teaching and learning.

Despite existing for over 80 years, very little has been done to refurbish it.

The school lacks an ICT Center, a library, a washroom, and classroom blocks.

The school has no toilet facility, which leaves teachers and pupils with no option but to defecate in the bush.

The pupils and teachers are much more concerned about the state of their classrooms.

The structure housing some pupils in upper primary, which was built by community members some years ago, is also not in the best of shapes.

Portions of the building have collapsed, and deep cracks have developed in it, making it unsafe for its users.

Teachers and pupils are often stranded anytime it rains.

They say they live in constant fear that the building may collapse someday.

Speaking to the media during the Gyereso Unity Association’s Homecoming Program to raise funds for the school project, Gyereso’s Kyidomhene, Nana Kofi Nkwantabisa, urged the government, as well as the MP and DCE, Hon. Isaac Kwame Asiamah and Hon. Isaac Kofi Marfo, respectively, to help renovate the Gyereso school building in order to enhance learning and lessen the building’s potentially disastrous cracks.

In a statement, Nana Nkwantabisa stated that they are not going to wait for the school building to close down in the event of a calamity triggered by impending rain before they seek assistance from the authorities or any individual.

He went on to say that in addition to the crumbling school building, they also had problems with the network and health facilities.
