Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who will be electing parliamentary candidates within constituencies with sitting Members of Parliament have been urged to select candidates who meet the criteria like, loyalty, long service, knowing the party ideologies, and respect for party structures among others.

The appeal was made by Mr. John Kwame Duodu, popularly known as Sir John, the Constituency First Vice Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Constituency of the Ashanti Region who doubles as the Ashanti Regional TESCON Patron.

He stated that the delegates should make a thoughtful decision on January 27 because the NPP will need experienced members in the ninth Parliament come January 7, 2025.

The departure of a large number of experienced Members of Parliament from both the NPP and NDC parties, according to the Ashanti Regional TESCON Patron, could present serious shortcomings for the next Parliament.

He also emphasized the importance of having seasoned lawmakers who would instruct and guide incoming new lawmakers.

Sir John emphasized that the legislative body’s ability to function effectively depends on the knowledge transfer from seasoned lawmakers.

He went on to say that the fact that most of the MPs  quitting parliament are highly experienced will hurt the next Parliament

Consequently, Sir John admonished the NPP delegates to look out for candidates who possess the necessary experience and are qualified to carry out the duties of a legislator to mitigate the effects of the vacuum that the wealth of expertise that will be absent from the 9th Parliament will produce.

He asked the delegates to support candidates who will represent the party, constituents, and the country’s interests rather than those who are just popular and also to refrain from voting for candidates based solely on their financial standing.

He added that the delegates ought to take that into account and maintain some of the more seasoned candidates who decided to contest for their seats.

Eighteen (18) NPP Parliamentary Membership have decided not to run for reelection and automatically will bring new faces in the 9th Parliamentary which will be a big blow to the Party.
