Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly referred to as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been exonerated of allegations that he disrespected Asantehene Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II.
It had been alleged that Chairman Wontumi had made disparaging remarks against Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, and the Ashanti Kingdom.
Chairman Wontumi was placed on the Kumasi Traditional Council’s wanted list as a result of his words.
He was supposed to meet with the Council earlier, but the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership said that he was unable to attend because of health issues. Mr. Wontumi complied with the directive to come before the council by January 29, 2024, which was given to him.
Chairman Wontumi was cleared of all charges during the meeting with the chiefs on January 29.
Accompanying Chairman Wontumi are esteemed figures, including Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah, Chieftaincy Minister Asamoah Boateng, Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, National Chairman of the NPP Stephen Ntim, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, NPP National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye, NPP National Treasurer Dr. Charles Dwamena, and various other NPP regional executives.
A video shared by Kumasi-based Oyerepa TV showed the Chiefs addressing the matter. In the said video, one of the chiefs argued in favor of Wontumi and further cleared him of any wrongdoing.
He further cautioned the accuser, Kokosuhene, Nana Kwaku Duah, to refrain from bringing political issues to the Manhyia Palace.
“The constitution says that chiefs should refrain from active politics… when the comments were being made Nana Kokosohene should have left the moment, he heard Wontumi say that he cannot even challenge a statement made by the Okyeame – he shouldn’t have sat there,” the chief said in Twi.

The chief also said that Wontumi limited himself to a political kingdom which means his statement was only about the NPP and not Asantehene and the Asantehene.
