Historian and a Private Legal Practitioner, Nana Obiri Boahen says Asantes have every right to observe the 150th Anniversary of the Anglo-Asante War of 1874, popularly known as Sagrenti War describing it as a colorful ceremony.

Lawyer Nana Obiri Baohen urged the remaining tribes to imitate from the Asantes by commemorating a special event in their history.

Asanteman on Thursday, February 8, 2024, converged on the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi for a grand durbar of chiefs to welcome back home some of the Asante artefacts that were looted by the British troops 150 years ago during the Sagrenti War.

The first batch of seven treasures from the Fowler Museum of the University of California in Los Angeles was handed over to Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The Sagrenti War, also known as the Third Anglo-Ashanti War, was fought between the British Empire and the Ashanti Empire from 1873 to 1874. The war resulted in the capture and destruction of the Ashanti capital, Kumasi, by the British and the imposition of a harsh treaty that demanded the payment of a large indemnity and the cessation of human sacrifice by the Ashanti.

According to Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen, the returning of the looted artifacts by the British is an indication that the whites are good custodians of properties thereby appealing to Chiefs and Politicians to learn from the British.

Speaking on In an interview on Wontumi TV/Radio he lamented that “after 150 years the whites have brought back the artefacts they looted but here in Ghana some ancient state lands have been sold.

The historian, however, bared teeth on some Asantes who sit on social media to spew reckless comments against the Bono people and some other tribes.

According to Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen, the unguarded pride and boasting of their tribe by some Asantes on TikTok are the reason why some ethnic groups attack Ashantis.

He posited that it is uncivilized for a section of Asantes to rant relentless comments against some tribes.
