The Majority in Parliament is up in arms against any attempt to change the leadership of their caucus.

Rumors were rife about the potential removal of Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, to be replaced by his Deputy, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

In fact, the National Council and NEC meeting of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Monday had this change as an agenda. However, no decision was taken.

Addressing journalists in Parliament, a group of NPP MPs led by First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu warned that no change will be countenanced.

According to him, they are satisfied with the work of the current leadership led by Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

“The publication that is going around is not true; it’s false. The majority caucus has not made any change in its leadership, the majority caucus has not contemplated any change. We tell the whole world to ignore any such publication. We have confidence in the leadership as they are, and the status quo will remain the same. We are aware that upon the nomination of one of the deputy whips as a minister, a replacement would be made. That replacement will be made by the caucus when we have had the opportunity and time to consider the appropriate replacement,” he said.

A post shared via the Majority Caucus Facebook page said there have been changes in the leadership of the Majority.

The response follows Media reports indicating that the current Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu is poised to be succeeded by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who currently serves as the Deputy Majority Leader.

While it remains uncertain if Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu will retain his ministerial role, he is anticipated to take on the responsibility of chairing the NPP’s 2024 Manifesto Committee.

In the wake of these impending changes, Frank Annoh Dompreh, the incumbent Majority Chief Whip, is rumoured to be stepping up as the new Deputy Majority Leader. This shift would open the position of Majority Chief Whip for Habib Iddrisu, who presently holds the office of the First Deputy Chief Whip.

The intended reshuffle also includes the likely appointment of either Patricia Appiagyei or Freda Prempeh as the new First Deputy Majority Chief Whip, following Lydia Seyram Alhassan’s recent nomination as Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation by President Nana Akuffo-Addo.

Additionally, the role of Second Deputy Chief Whip is expected to be filled by Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, the Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Akontombra.
