In a thrilling display of strategic prowess and sheer determination, Ghana’s youth and junior national handball teams have etched their names in the annals of the IHF Trophy Africa Zone III history.

The stage is set for an unforgettable finals showdown after the teams clinched victory in the semifinals of the ongoing IHF Trophy Africa Zone III in Accra 2024.

The junior squad, led by the astute coach Hilary Mills and his team (Emmanuel Sampah, Philippine Dede Ossom and Alvaro Garde), faced a formidable Benin team on the 23rd of February, 2024. Employing a five-one defense system early on to nullify Benin’s star player, the Ghanaian team seamlessly transitioned to a four-two zonal defense, outsmarting their opponents with a final scoreline of 32-26. The agile Ghanaian goalkeeper turned moments of brilliance into turnover opportunities, ensuring Ghana’s dominance until the last whistle. Prince Kubi, the dynamic winger, stole the show with 8 spectacular goals, earning him the well-deserved MVP title.

Meanwhile, in a shocking turn of events, the defending champions Nigeria faltered against the relentless Ivorian squad in the second phase of the semifinals. The Nigerians struggled to execute their tactics, succumbing to the Ivorian onslaught with a final score of 32-36. Ivorian goalkeeper Mollou Kouassi Yannick emerged as the MVP, showcasing an awe-inspiring display of saves against the formidable Nigerian team.

As the tournament reached its crescendo, other notable results unfolded. In the battle for 3rd and 4th place, Benin secured a convincing 30-20 victory over Togo (U18), while Togo triumphed over Liberia (U20) with a scoreline of 42-33 in the 5th and 6th placement match.

Looking ahead to the final day, anticipation runs high as the Bronze Match pits Nigeria against Benin (U20), promising a fierce contest. The youth team finals will witness Ghana and Nigeria battling for supremacy (U18), while the junior category features a captivating clash between Ghana and Côte D’Ivoire (U20). Brace yourselves for a spectacle of skill, determination, and heart-stopping moments as these teams vie for IHF Trophy glory in an unprecedented finale.
