Unidentified persons have vandalized and stolen copper windings from a transformer belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd. (ECG).

The transformer that provided power to the people living in Memp3asem, a suburb of Akyem Asene in the Asene-Manso-Akroso district of the Eastern region, toppled off its pole mount, leaving the whole area in complete darkness.

The incident occurred between the hours of 2:00 and 3:00 am on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

The fractured transformer’s rated power indicates that it is a 100 kVA transformer, weighing a total of 790 kg, and was manufactured in 2022, according to the label.

According to some of the residents who spoke with Daily Searchlight, they mistook the observation that their lights were out for an ordinary blackout.

They appealed to the government and the ECG to act swiftly to replace the damaged transformer to connect them back to the national grid.

Meanwhile, the Akyem Oda District Manager of ECG, Ing. Maxwell Essel, expressed worry about the destruction and theft of equipment by the company.

Even though ECG plans to rebuild the transformer, he asked the residents to exercise caution and assist them in apprehending the offenders.

Mr. Essel also appealed to residents to be law-abiding citizens and help protect government property.

“Everyone needs electricity to function, and we cannot obtain electricity without a transformer”, he said

While visiting the scene with the Akyem Oda Divisional Police Commander, the manager made this declaration.

On his part, the Oda Divisional Police Commander, ACP Samuel Nyamekye Adane Ameyaw, expressed his disappointment with the occurrences that had transpired.

ACP Rev. Adane Ameyaw added that the public should know that these theft cases affect all of us and must continue to offer the necessary assistance to arrest these thieves.

He urged every Ghanaian to be a good citizen by notifying the police, whose doors are always open, about any suspect in their area of residence.

He assured that the police will continue to pursue those who have been targeting and stealing their installations until the last culprit is caught.

Due to a shortage of staff, cars, motors, and equipment, Ghanaians are being asked to assist the Oda Divisional Police Command in carrying out their duties effectively.
