The decision to rename the Tamale Airport after Yakubu Tali, the late Tolon Naa. has angered Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, the King of Dagbon.
The government intends to rename the Tamale and Kumasi airports after completion, as stated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during the State of the Nation Address.
He declared that the Yakubu Tali International Airport will be the new name of the Tamale Airport.
However, according to the Office of the Ya-Na, it will not be advantageous to the people of the Northern Region to name the Tamale Airport after Yakubu Tali, a Tolon-Naa.
A statement from his outfit indicated that the move will draw the Northern Region into unwanted controversy; something the President is not prepared for.
“The renaming of Tamale International Airport after Tolon Naa Yakubu will be contentious and counterproductive. It will draw our traditional state and entire Northern Region into needless controversy”.
To the Ya-Na, such honour should be bestowed on the Na-Gbewa.
