Kenneth Kuranchie Dumps NPP; Goes Independent In Okaikoi North Parliamentary Elections

A Ghanaian journalist and former board member of the National Media Commission, Lawyer Kenneth Agyei Kuranchie has announced his intention to run as an independent in the Okaikoi North Constituency parliamentary election.

The Daily Searchlight Newspaper’s editor, argues that responding to a clarion call from the constituency’s residents played a role in his choice to become independent.

Lawyer Kenneth Agyei Kuranchie, is known publicly as a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He has repeatedly failed to receive the NPP’s endorsement as the parliamentary candidate for the Okaikoi North Constituency.

In June 2020 Kuranchie contested in the Parliamentary Primaries of the New Patriotic Party to represent the Okaikoi North Constituency but lost to Fuseini Issah the incumbent member of parliament.

Lawyer Kenneth Agyei Kuranchie ran in the Parliamentary Primaries for the second time in 2023, but he was defeated by Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, the sitting MP for the Akropong Constituency.

Poised for victory, an unhappy New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant boldly claimed that he has what it takes to snatch the parliamentary seat from the National Democratic Congress in the 2024 general elections

He added that he relies on his strong organizational skills, his deep touch with the base, and his philanthropic nature as key to capturing the seat.

 

 

 

 

 

 

About the 2023 NPP primary in Okaikoi North

The Incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the Akropong Constituency in the Eastern Region, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei who is in her second term opted to contest at Okaikoi North Constituency in the Greater Accra Region instead of Akropong as a result of the decision of Sammi Awuku to annex the seat.

With 341 votes, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei moved on to win the Okaikwei North parliamentary primary.

About 850 delegates voted in the Okaikwei North constituency. Six aspirants were in the race within this constituency, hoping to be the next parliamentary candidate on the ticket of the NPP.

They included Kenneth Kwabena Agyei Kuranchie who polled 27, Prince Owusu Mensah had six votes, Akoto Alberta Afia Asomaniwa polled 228, and Nyarko Stephen Adipa who garnered 108 votes. Fuseini Issah, the former MP for the area polled 114.

 

 

Kenneth Agyei Kuranchie, born in Tepa, Ashanti Region on 5 August 1969) is a Ghanaian journalist and former board member of the National Media Commission.

He studied at St. Mary’s International School in Sunyani, Brong-Ahafo Region, Opoku Ware Secondary School, the University of Ghana, and Mountcrest University in Accra for his LLB.

He started practicing journalism at the P&P entertainment newspaper, and subsequently at Guide newspaper (now known as Daily Guide). He also worked at The Ghanaian Chronicle. He then set up his own paper, The Daily Searchlight.

In 2013, Kuranchie was convicted of criminal contempt for a publication in his newspaper Daily Searchlight and not showing remorse, and sentenced to 10 days imprisonment by the Supreme Court.

He is the author of several books including ‘Principles of Applied and Practical Journalism (2019), as well as the children’s books “Journey to Ada”, “The Rabbit, The Sparrow, and The Lizard”, “In Search of Vengeance” and “The Story of Fate”.

“Journey to Ada”, and “The Rabbit, The Sparrow and The Lizard” have been accredited by Ghana’s Commission for Curriculum and Assessment (NACCA) as supplementary readers for primary schools in Ghana.

Kenneth Agyei Kuranchie owns an NGO and a clothing factory.
The Parliamentary Election History of Okaikoi North

The NPP has won the seat on six occasions since the constituency was established: Joseph Darko Mensah in 1996 and 2000, Elizabeth Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey in 2004, 2008, and 2012, and Fuseini Issah in 2016.

It will be noted that Theresa Lardi Awuni of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) defeated the NPP’s former MP, Mr. Fuseini Issah in the 2020 legislative race in the Okaikoi North Constituency.

Moreover, Only twice has the National Democratic Congress (NDC) been successful in winning the seat: in 1992, when Sheriff E. Nii Oto Dodoo was elected, and in 2020, when Theresa Lardi Awuni won the seat.
