A member of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament and MP for Bongo constituency, Edward Abambire Bawa, has observed that the relocation of some units of the AMERI power plants, now Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant (K1TPP), to the Ashanti Region makes technical sense to resolve the low voltage issues in the area.
He indicated that he does not have anything against the government’s decision to relocate the plants from Aboadze in the Western Region to the Ashanti Region.
“Let me state it here very clearly, I have nothing against the relocation because it makes technical sense. It reduces transmission losses because you’re now bringing the power closer to consumers. It improves quality of voltage,” said Edward Bawa on The Key Points, yesterday [Saturday, April 20].
“Ashanti Region has this problem of fluctuation, we were thinking that Bui could have helped it because Bui is also in the northern part of Ghana…but it was not helping so with the relocation of these plants will support in the quality so I don’t have any problem with that,” he explained.
However, the Bongo legislator—who had previously alleged that the government spent $35 million transporting 6 out of the 10-unit plants—went on to criticise the Akufo-Addo government for poopooing the AMERI plants while they were in opposition.
He reiterated his party’s Deputy Communications Officer Malik Basintale’s statement asking President Akufo-Addo to “learn how to give birth if he has talent in organising naming ceremonies.”
Mr. Bawa also noted that the President has a penchant for “renaming things”, indicating that K1TPP is an attempt by the government to hoodwink the Ashanti Region voters since it has performed abysmally in terms of infrastructural projects in its supposed stronghold.
“The place I have a problem with is the fact that a project that you poopooed, you picked it up and took it to Kumasi and renamed it…you didn’t bring this project and because of the fact that he has this penchant for always renaming projects, he did that.
“Ashanti Region for a very long time has always been complaining about the fact that government has not done anything for them,” he said, adding that the government sought to use K1TPP to achieve “political value” in the region.
“We were trying to expose the hypocrisy of it,” he said.
