The Ashanti Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service, along with its partners WHO, USAID, UNICEF, PATH Ghana, amongst others, has launched the 2024 African Vaccination Week Celebration and Child Health Promotion Week.
Under this year’s theme, “Healthy Childhood: Invest in Your Child for a Better Future,” the goal is to raise awareness about the available essential child health services offered freely at various health centers and outreach points by the Ghana Health Service.
Running from May 1st to May 31st, African Vaccination Week was established in 2010 and is synchronized with other WHO Regions and World Immunization Week to promote vaccine use against preventable diseases.
The Ministry of Health (MOH) and Ghana Health Service (GHS) lead the joint observance of the two events in Ghana with the support of their partners.
Every year in the months of April and May, Ghana celebrates the African Vaccination Week and Child Health Promotion Week.
According to the Ashanti Regional Health Director, Dr. Emmanuel Tenkorang, the focus is to raise awareness and promote increased uptake of available and essential child health services that improve child health and survival.
“The week is also used to raise awareness about topical issues related to the health and survival of infants and children under five.
“This combined commemoration will help strengthen Ghana’s Immunization Programme by bringing to the public’s attention the high value and importance of immunization, the need for increased vaccination coverage towards achieving herd immunity, other child health interventions, and the critical role community ownership plays in the success of vaccination and child health programs in the country,” he said.
Dr. Tenkorang emphasized that this year’s theme serves as an important call for everyone to invest in their child’s health to create a better future for them.
“The theme serves as a clarion call for all to invest in their child’s health to create a better future for them.
“It is important for everyone, including mothers/caregivers, traditional, religious, and opinion leaders, the media, relevant groups, organizations, and sectors to get involved.
“Everyone has a role to play in ensuring our children are healthy from birth and steadily grow up to realize their full potential,” he emphasized.
He finally assured the public that all vaccines given to children are safe, effective, free, and protect children from vaccine-preventable diseases.
“This immunization will protect your child against childhood diseases and complete your child’s immunization by 2 years.
“This exercise is completely free of charge, so all parents should take advantage of it,” he concluded.
Child welfare clinics: static in Health Centers, Hospitals, CHPS Compounds, Outreach Points, and Communities (Schools, Worship Centers, Markets, Homes, Community Groups, and Associations) are the channels that will be used to provide the service.
