The government has been urged to address the infrastructure needs of the Akroso Senior High Technical School (AKROSEC), situated in the Asene Manso Akroso district of the Eastern region.
Akroso Senior High Technical School’s infrastructure deficiency, which makes studying extremely unpleasant for students, has been bitterly criticised by students, staff, and old students.
At the organised law-abiding citizen orientation for students held on the school campus by the AKROSEC Old Students Association, Mr. Alex Boateng Attafuah, Assistant Headmaster of administration, spoke to the Daily Searchlight, emphasizing how urgent it is to address the numerous problems the institution faces at the moment.
School’s Struggles
He disclosed that the school faces an assortment of challenges that hinder students from reaching their full academic potential, including insufficient school furniture, dormitories, and teacher bungalows.
Speaking of dorm issues, Mr. Alex Boateng stated that it is clear that inadequate facilities, in particular for females, directly affect academic performance.
He further noted that accommodating over 1,500 female students in dormitories meant for less than five hundred students is not only dehumanising but also portrays management and stakeholders as indifferent to students.
“It is in light of this inexpressible condition that we, as an institution, have high expectations of receiving help from every possible source to address this significant infrastructure deficit,” he noted.
“In light of the implementation of free SHS, students from all regions of the country are placed in the school, leaving us with no choice but to admit them. This has overwhelmed the existing accommodation facilities, resulting in severe congestion,” he added.
There are approximately 3,000 students enrolled, and they sit in groups of three or four people per dual desk, which, as the assistant headteacher pointed out, has caused significant discomfort for students.
According to Mr. Alex Boateng, the accommodation situation is getting worse as teachers trek miles to get to school, sometimes delaying the start of academic work.
“The location of the school in a town where the teachers stay is a bit far and comes as a disincentive to the teachers. Apart from that, the zeal to work is low. The infrastructure deficit is our headache. We have a hall that serves all purposes, and if it is being occupied by other events, we sometimes make students sit under the trees for lessons. The same venue serves as a dining hall if the event being held at the hall goes beyond our normal school time,” the assistant headmaster of the school complained.
Thus, he made a plea to the government, corporate entities, and philanthropists to come to aid the school.
On the Law-abiding Citizen Orientation
The Old Students’ Association was praised by the assistant headmaster for their ongoing assistance to the school.
He maintains that the final-year students in particular will learn how to live virtuously and avoid engaging in any criminal activity that could put them behind bars.
Mr. Alex Boateng went on to say that while the teachers are doing their best to maintain the students’ discipline, the law-abiding citizen orientation will be more beneficial because the experts will have interaction with the students.
On his part, the president of Akroso Senior High Technical School’s Old Students Association, Mr. Isaac Kojo Obeng Amunti, notes that the association felt it was necessary to organise this kind of programme ” law-abiding citizen orientation” for their former school’s students because the old students noticed some students in various educational institutions in the nation engaging in unlawful acts.
He added his voice to the the educational institution’s cry and pleaded with the government and other supporting organisations to rescue the school by offering it the desks and other infrastructure it needs to improve the quality of education.
Additionally, a handful of Akroso Senior High Technical School students also bemoaned the lack of school facilities and expressed gratitude to their old students association for providing the institution with enormous, timely, and ongoing support.
