Pay Us or Face Our Wrath – All African Games’ Medical Volunteers Warn

Spread the love

The Collation of Medical Volunteers for All African Games 2023 has threatened to stage a demonstration if the government fails to pay them their allowances.

The collation consists of medical volunteers who assisted the Ministry of Sports and Local Organising Committee (LOC) during the recently concluded All African Games, which included medical professionals (medical doctors, physician assistants, nurses, midwives, biomedical scientists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, first aiders, the Red Cross, St. John’s, and EMTs) who volunteered their time and expertise to support the successful execution of the games.

It will be recalled that the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 2023 African Games have yielded to pressure from volunteers and agreed to pay their allowance.

This announcement was made through a communiqué released by the LOC on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, following extensive discussions with stakeholders.

This decision comes in response to fervent protests by volunteers who were left unpaid following the conclusion of the continental event.

Meanwhile, in a press statement signed by the National PRO for the Collation of Medical Volunteers for All African Games 2023, Richmond Boakye Asiamah says that despite multiple attempts to seek payment from the government, they have been unsuccessful in receiving their dues.

In the statement, it said, “As agreed upon, the Ministry promised to provide a stipend to these volunteers in appreciation.of their services, for which our account details were taken some months ago. Unfortunately, Despite numerous follow-ups, the stipend has yet to be paid.”.

The volunteers have been patiently waiting for several months, and their efforts and dedication to the success of the games are being severely undermined by this delay.

The Collation requests that the Ministry and the LOC expedite the payment of the stipend to the
medical volunteers without further delay.
