A second-year student of the Christian Service University has sustained a head injury after he was allegedly assaulted by some supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kumasi.

In a troubling incident that has cast a shadow over the 50th-anniversary celebrations of Christian Service University College, the TESCON Organizer, Nana Boakye, was allegedly beaten by the bodyguard of former President and NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

The altercation reportedly occurred after John Mahama’s lecture, during which he made a controversial statement, “we shouldn’t give the country to a joker like Bawumia.”

Nana Boakye, who vehemently disagreed with Mahama’s remark, claims that his dissenting argument led to the physical assault right in front of the former President.

Nana Boakye, now nursing head and shoulder injuries, expressed profound fear and insecurity following the incident.

He stated, “I feel insecure, threatened, and discomfort living in the region since I’ve been threatened with death by some NDC thugs.”

The gravity of the situation has prompted Boakye to appeal to the general public and security forces for enhanced protection, citing that his life is in imminent danger.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with notable political figures weighing in.

Mr. Paul Yandoh, the Ashanti Regional Communications Director for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has denounced the attack, labeling it as “barbaric.”

He emphasized that the actions of Mahama’s alleged bodyguards are antithetical to democratic principles, especially given Mahama’s status as a statesman.

“The bodyguards of the former President should practice democracy since their boss is a statesman.

“The incident at Christian Service University College raises significant concerns about NDC’s intolerance and the safety of individuals expressing dissenting views.

This goes against the right of a Ghanaian student and shouldn’t be allowed,” Andoh asserted.

Again, Mr. Yandoh assured that the NPP would ensure that justice is served for Nana Boakye.

He affirmed, “In our democratic society, the freedom to express differing opinions is sacrosanct. This assault on Nana Boakye is not just an attack on an individual but a challenge to the very principles of democratic engagement and civil discourse.

“Since TESCON falls under the NPP, we’ll see to it that the victim is treated.”

This commitment underscores the NPP’s dedication to protecting the rights and safety of its members, particularly those in educational institutions.

As the situation develops, it remains imperative for security agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure the protection of all parties involved.

The incident calls for a reaffirmation of commitment to these values, ensuring that such episodes do not recur, and that political dialogue remains constructive and respectful.
