The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) is set to honour President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo with an honorary Doctor of Science degree (honoris causa) in recognition of his significant contributions to science education in Ghana.

The special congregation ceremony is scheduled to take place on July 29 at the University’s Cedi Auditorium, Main Campus, Sokode-Lokoe.

In a press release signed by Mrs. Maria Gwira, Director of Public Affairs, UHAS announced that the University Council approved the decision to honour President Akufo-Addo for his exemplary leadership in making science education more accessible to Ghanaian families.

This recognition comes in light of the President’s implementation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, his prioritisation of STEM education, and the completion of the UHAS China-aided Phase 2 Expansion project.

UHAS, as a science-focused university, acknowledges President Akufo-Addo’s efforts to enhance education in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. A key achievement highlighted by the University is the 2017 Free SHS policy, which has made secondary education free for all Ghanaian students, significantly reducing the financial burden on parents.

The statement also noted the establishment of several STEM-focused Senior High Schools across the country as part of the President’s educational initiatives.

Moreover, the University expressed its gratitude for the President’s role in the expansion of UHAS, particularly through the government’s partnership with the Chinese Government.

This collaboration resulted in a $60 million project that included the construction of the Central Administration complex, the largest School of Nursing and Midwifery in West Africa, and a fully equipped state-of-the-art Simulation Centre. The project is expected to increase the University’s student capacity by at least 2,500.

“We extend our appreciation to the President and congratulate him on his well-deserved recognition,” the statement concluded.
