WeLearn Ghana a Ghanaian NGO that uses education and educational initiatives to alleviate poverty in collaboration with Better World Books a socially responsible online book store founded by students of the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, U.S.A. has successfully concluded the first phase of a project called Bright Beginnings in the Oforikrom and Ejisu Municipal Assemblies.

The project, targeting children aged 2-5 years, is set to make a lasting impact on early childhood education in these rural setting communities by enhancing the quality of early literacy education through a combination of peer-to-peer learning, provision of fun and interactive teaching and learning materials, professional development and community engagement.

The groundbreaking initiative began with an in-depth survey and needs assessment conducted across 20 schools in the Oforikrom and Ejisu Municipal Assemblies.

Teachers who participated in the survey, shed light on the current state of early literacy education, the challenges faced, and their professional development needs with the cumulative number of children taught by these teachers being over 500 to address these challenges, an interactive training program was organized for teachers.

Teachers were actively engaged in designing and presenting interactive literacy activities and were given teaching and learning materials to incorporate into their daily lessons.Feedbacks from teachers was very positive.

Madam Lydia Appiah a KG2 teacher at Oforikrom M/A Basic A shared “We have always been neglected by educational authorities because we’re preschool teachers, no TLMS are provided to us, no additional training and no support, but Welearn Ghana has us in mind and to me that is big step in the right direction.

”Madam Rita Bonye a KG1 teacher at Ayigya M/A Basic said “I am overwhelmed by the interactiveness of the training and TLMS, this will help us greatly.

The Executive Director, Adu Sika Jochebed said after the program “The ultimate goal is to create a brighter future for the next generation, where every child has the opportunity to develop strong literacy skills and achieve their full potential.

The completion of the initial phase marks a significant milestone for the Bright Beginnings project. However, the journey to enhancing early literacy in the Oforikrom and Ejisu Municipal Assemblies is far from over. Continued support, training, and resource provision are essential to ensure that the positive momentum is sustained and we’re going to see to it.”

As the project moves forward, it remains committed to empowering educators, engaging parents, and fostering a love for reading and learning among young children.
