The Accra Aquila Lions Club successfully trained over 100 individuals in vocational skills during their August activities. The aim was to assist needy and vulnerable communities in Akyem Small London, located in the Asene Manso Akroso District in the Eastern Region. The training took place on Saturday, August 17th, 2024, with the theme “Empowering Futures: Coconut Biscuit (Poolo) Entrepreneurship for Young Girls”.
The training included topics on setting up businesses, bookkeeping, customer relationships, and self-empowerment. The goal was to equip the participants with the necessary skills to establish self-reliance. As part of the club’s commitment to achieving sustainable development and economic empowerment, they provided training in making coconut biscuits (Poolo), a local snack.
Lion Deloris Enyo Awalime, the club’s treasurer and Charter President of the Accra Aquila Lions Club, explained that they chose the Akyem Small London community because their needs assessment revealed a high number of unemployed youth. The club saw the potential in the youth to start businesses, with only a lack of startup capital hindering them. This motivated the club to carry out their monthly activity in this community and provide startup funds for the participants’ businesses.
She also mentioned that there would be regular check-ups on the girls to monitor their progress and provide ongoing support to help them succeed. The club not only came to empower the youth but also brought slightly used clothing for children and the youth in the community.
Lion President Bernice Barnieh, the 2024/2025 Accra Aquila Club President, noted that Small London is one of the less privileged communities in the district, making it the perfect target for economic empowerment initiatives. They aimed to empower five girls specifically in order to make a positive impact on the community.
Hon. Alex Lartey, the Assembly member in the community, expressed his appreciation to the club for their efforts in supporting the youth in the community. He also appealed to them to extend their support to other communities in his area.
The beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the club’s leaders and promised to utilize the skills and resources provided to empower themselves economically.
