Don’t Blame Bawumia For Current Government’s Policies; He Has Limited Influence – Poku Nsafoa Tells Ghanaians

Kwadwo Poku Nsafoa, a member of the New Patriotic Party’s manifesto committee, has defended the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, against criticism of perceived failures of the current NPP government.

Poku Nsafoa’s defence of Dr. Bawumia comes as the NPP flagbearer faces scrutiny for his campaign promises, which some argue are contradictory to the current government’s policies.

Dr. Bawumia has promised to abolish the e-levy, a policy implemented by the current government, and reinstate road tolls, which were abolished by the same government.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue, Poku Nsafoa urged Ghanaians not to blame Dr. Bawumia for policies implemented by the current government, emphasizing that as Vice President, he has limited influence.

Poku Nsafoa explained that Dr. Bawumia has consistently expressed dissenting opinions in cabinet meetings, citing the electronic levy (e-levy) and road tolls as examples.

He revealed that Dr. Bawumia was the sole voice against the e-levy in cabinet but was overruled.

Similarly, Dr. Bawumia opposed the abolition of road tolls, which was nonetheless implemented.

Poku Nsafoa argued that Ghanaians should view Dr. Bawumia as an individual with his own ideas and vision, rather than solely as a member of the current government.

He stressed that Dr. Bawumia’s promises, such as abolishing the e-levy and reinstating road tolls, reflect his own policies and vision for the country.

He said, “When there’s a vote, Dr. Bawumia has one vote. It is now public knowledge that Dr, Bawumia was 100% against it. It was a proposal from the former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta. Dr. Bawumia was the lone voice in the cabinet on e-levy, it passed.”

“There are countless examples where he’s against something in the cabinet and the cabinet rules it. When the tolls were being abolished, he wasn’t in support of the tolls being abolished and it was abolished, today it’s coming back.”

“Yes, it’s a party that promotes manifesto but it’s the flagbearer of the party who becomes president and his vision is taken. That’s why he keeps repeating this thing’ I am my own person, and I have my own policies’.

“So, Ghanaians should look at Dr. Bawumia as an individual who has sat in the cabinet learnt a lot in cabinet, served his boss for the last eight years but has his own ideas. The digitalisation ideas, making Ghana card as part of a lot of things was something that Nana Addo wants to do.”
