The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has accused the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of making empty promises to win power.
Speaking at the NDC’s manifesto launch in Winneba on Saturday, August 24, Mr. Kwetey underscored the importance of principled promises in elections.
He cautioned against treating elections as a competition of who can promise more, stating that the NDC cannot match the NPP’s history of making unrealistic promises.
Mr. Kwetey cited the NPP’s 1992 promise to build rail lines from Accra to Northern Ghana as an example of their tendency to make “easy promises” without considering feasibility.
According to him, the NDC’s promises are guided by principles, honour, and policies, unlike the NPP’s approach of making promises solely to win power.
He emphasized that the NDC’s promises are inspired by a desire to deliver meaningful change, rather than making empty vows just to secure votes.
“We need to be careful that the competition for power should never become a simple competition between who can promise more. If it’s an issue of who can promise more, we know the NDC, we can never match our friends in the NPP. Many of you remember that even as far back as 1992, in that very first election of the 4th republic, NPP already started promising this country, their capacity to build rail lines from Accra to the Northern part of Ghana, 1992.”
“So, these are people who are known for easy promises. Because unfortunately, they believe that, to win power, you need to say anything. So, anything that can be promised, just promise. So, a contest between us and them on the back of promises, it’s a contest that naturally we’ll lose. Because if you have integrity, you have honour, you don’t just promise anything for the sake of promise. Promises are important but promises based on policies, that’s what we want to deliver and Must be inspired by principles.”
