The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) headquarters was abuzz on Monday, September 9, 2024, as the commission began receiving nominations for the 2024 presidential election.
Of the 39 aspirants who picked up nomination forms, 24 candidates successfully filed their nominations before the Friday, September 13, 2024 deadline.
The nominees comprise both political party candidates and independent aspirants, including three female candidates.
Independent Candidates
Among the independent candidates who filed their nominations are Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, Samuel Apea-Danquah, George Twum Barima Adu, Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar and Desmond Abrefah.
The rest are Nana Stephens Adjepong, Paul Perkoh, James Kwesi Oppong, John Enyonam Kwakwu Kpikpi, Dr Samuel Sampong Ankrah, Nii Amu Darko and Kofi Koranteng.
Candidates of Political Parties
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was the first to file his nomination from the political parties, accompanied by party executives.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) chairman also submitted the nomination of their flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, on September 9.
Other political party candidates who filed their nominations include Dr Hassan Ayariga (All People’s Congress), Bernard Mornah (People’s National Convention), Kofi Akpaloo (Liberal Party of Ghana), and Dr Daniel Augustus Lartey Jnr (Great Consolidated People’s Party).
Additionally, Rev. Christian Kwabena Andrews (Ghana Union Movement), Kofi Asamoah Siaw (Progressive People’s Party), and Mohammed Frimpong (National Democratic Party) also submitted their nominations.
The three female candidates who filed their nominations are Akua Donkor (Ghana Freedom Party), Janet Nabla (People’s National Party), and Nana Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankumah.
The successful filing of nominations marks a significant milestone in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election.
Meanwhile, the EC has assured the public that it will thoroughly review all candidate nomination forms.
