After making history at the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2024) in Apia, Samoa, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, the newly elected Commonwealth Secretary-General, has returned to a warm welcome in Ghana.
Her election on October 26 marked a groundbreaking achievement as the first African woman to hold the prestigious post.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led the welcoming party at Kotoka International Airport, joined by dignitaries from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, traditional leaders, and prominent members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The enthusiastic reception highlighted the pride felt across the nation following Botchwey’s significant achievement on the international stage.
Botchwey’s nomination triumphed over notable contenders, including Senator Joshua Setipa of Lesotho and Dr. Mamadou Tangara of The Gambia, with her candidacy strongly supported by both President Akufo-Addo and former President John Mahama.
This bipartisan endorsement underscored Ghana’s unified backing for her leadership role.
Upon assuming her new position, Botchwey will succeed the United Kingdom’s Patricia Scotland, the Baroness of Scotland, ushering in a new era of leadership for the Commonwealth.
Her term is anticipated to bring fresh perspectives and strengthened ties among member states, with particular focus on enhancing regional cooperation within the Commonwealth.
A seasoned diplomat, Ayorkor Botchwey brings to the role extensive experience as Ghana’s former Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, along with her tenure as a Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom in Accra.
Known for her commitment to diplomacy and regional integration, Botchwey’s election is celebrated as a testament to her respected standing in both Ghana and the international community.
